New Year – Nee Doctor Who! Turning the lack of a Christmas slot into a positive, we now have the newly coined phrase ‘Who Year’s Day’. Oh, and we have a new scarf. I’m not too sure what to make of it. Scarves are nothing new to Who, after all, Tom Baker’s famously long scarf is a series icon. Jodie Whittaker’s scarf is shorter, more practical and complements her t-shirt colours and coat piping. But the range of colours, this rainbow of colours is controversial.
For anyone like myself who cringes when agenda politics inveigle its way into the entertainment industry, the sight of a rainbow scarf breaks the fourth wall. However, this is more of a multicoloured scarf rather than a strictly rainbow striped scarf and would only come under fire by so-called Who fans who are desperate to be offended by anything new-Who related. What I would say and I’m mangling Freud’s famous quotation ‘Sometimes a scarf is just a scarf’
